Like a lot of you, I’ve been horrified by the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and we’ve spoken out repeatedly and forcefully for a ceasefire, and in support of public protest and comment against the war. But there’s a more direct connection between fossil fuels and the ongoing war: Chevron.
The Chevron Corporation fuels Israel’s war machine as co-owner of the major gas fields off the coast of occupied Palestinian land. We’re taking action to push Chevron to divest from its oil and gas projects in Israel now. Take the #BoycottChevron for Gaza Pledge now by sending a message to CEO Mike Wirth with our easy-to-use message tool.
Yesterday we marked the 76th anniversary of the Nakba on May 15th. While we hold this ongoing tragedy, Israel is invading and bombing Rafah where over 1.5 million Palestinian civilians, including 600,000 children are trapped. President Biden has paused some deadly weapons shipments, but allowed others. And Congress is set to vote on a bill that would prohibit Biden and his administration to impede the delivery of defense articles and services.
Chevron is responsible for atrocities around the world in places like Ecuador, Myanmar and California for way too long. And boycott and divestment campaigns can be uniquely powerful. In the 1970’s and 80’s – divestment movements were critical in ending the South African Apartheid government. More recently, climate divestments movements have moved more than $40 trillion (with a T!) dollars out of the fossil fuel industry.
Now we need to apply those lessons and use every tool in our nonviolent direct action toolbox to push for a permanent ceasefire in Palestine. Take the #BoycottChevron for Gaza pledge now.
