American cities are already under attack by Trumps fossil fueled fascist regime. The illegal deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles, Washington D.C, Chicago, Memphis, and Portland is an assault on our rights and values. But this week’s election results put New York City at an elevated risk of occupation and militarization.
If you already know and agree – click here to join the Hands Off NYC coalition in action on November 15. If you find the idea that New York City could be invaded by a fossil fueled fascist army surprising, read on for more context.
First of all, let’s dispense with the regime’s myth that this is about crime. This is not about crime. The crime rates in each of the cities above have been going down, not up. And it’s the same in New York City. What they do share is strong, multi-racial, power led by working people and unions — and city and/or state leadership that refuses to bow down to the regime.
But the election of Zohran Mamdani as NYC’s next mayor — by a wide margin and with more votes than any candidate in decades — has clearly frightened and enraged trump and his billionaire backers. Trump has already threatened to cut off all federal funding (which is illegal, but what else is new). And he’s been threatening to send in the guard for months – a move we’ve worked to oppose in NYC and everywhere else.
But there’s a real chance that Trump escalates from threats to deployments in the next few weeks. Which is why on November 15th, we’ll gather with neighbors for a community day of action and solidarity. Together, we will take the streets, talk to our neighbors, and make it clear from every borough to every street that masked agents are not welcome here!
Our tax dollars should strengthen our cities, not tear families apart. Public funds should strengthen schools, hospitals, fight climate change, and invest in our communities. Together, we can win. 198 methods is one of hundreds of groups that have pledged to organize together, build local power, and stand in solidarity with every city facing military occupation. Our cities and our people are our greatest strength. Join us on November 15 to say Hands off NYC!
