Polls show that data centers and the AI bots built in them are unpopular with the American public. But Trump and his fossil fueled fascist regime are still trying to push data centers. Whether by placing them on public lands, or proposing weak regulations (or, in Trump’s case another ridiculous AI FORCE) in exchange for a faster build-out.
But the truth is we can’t let Trump and his regime determine the pace of action – they’ve already made it clear they stand with their big tech backers like Elon Musk. And we can’t wait around for regulators like the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to step in and save us either – they’re a huge rubber stamp and only looking to make it faster and easier to build these potential extinction machines. We need to stop the data center rush-to-build with a moratorium. And for that, we need Congress and other elected leaders to act.
We’ve talked a lot about how AI and the data centers it lives on are driving up costs, polluting our climate, and threatening communities—All to benefit the fossil fueled fascist billionaires and tech bros. And communities are coming together to tell Big Tech no:
We’re in NYC this week for the Unplug AI Week of Action. Bernie and AOC have introduced a bill that would enforce a nationwide moratorium on new data centers – the AI Data Center Moratorium Act. And last year more than 300 cities, towns, and counties have banned or paused massive data center construction. This is truly a mass movement.
And it’s not hard to see why. AI data centers bring 24-hour noise, water shortages, and sharp hikes to our power bills. This is about ultra-wealthy investors destroying our communities for their own profits, while our neighborhoods, environment, and wallets pay the price. A new poll confirmed it: Just 14% would accept an AI data center being built nearby.
Local governments are listening. In just the first three months of this year, 75 major projects – worth over $130 BILLION – were either delayed or canceled. But tech giants are still racing to build hundreds more.
To protect every community, we need nationwide action.
That’s why Congress must pass a federal moratorium on new data centers until real rules to protect our climate and communities can be written and adopted at every level. Add your name to our public petition and we’ll deliver your signature as part of the #UnplugAI week of action and take the message directly to Congress after the mid term elections (the House is on recess until then).
