Still banking on climate chaos

The 2026 Banking on Climate Chaos report is out and it’s the most comprehensive analysis on fossil fuel banking ever produced. Sadly, this latest report tells a devastating, and familiar, story: Fossil banks are killing the planet.

For years we’ve been campaigning to break up big banks and fossil fuels. And it should be true in 2026 that there’s no safer, cleaner, and better investment than in solar, wind, and renewable energy. But as we’ve seen again and again, big banks always choose short term profit over long term survival of our climate and communities. And with Trump back in office, these killer banks have been investing more than ever before in fossil fuels, war, and ecocide.

This year’s report continues to investigate the fossil fuel financing and policies of the world’s 65 largest banks. Fossil fuel financing from these banks has reached nearly $8.7 trillion in the ten years since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, with $906 billion in 2025 alone

But people around the world are rising up and fighting back. We’ve been part of major actins and campaigns targeting Wells Fargo, CitiBank, Chase, and more. And since Trump’s return to power, we’ve stepped up our campaigns targeting billionaires and the ultra-wealthy. And we’re not alone.

This year’s banking on climate chaos report was prepared by the usual coalition of friends like Rainforest Action Network (RAN), BankTrack, the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN), Oil Change International (OCI), and more. It was also endorsed by 340 organizations in 55 countries around the world and includes testimony and fence line reporting from frontline groups on every continent.
