On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Houston, Texas. Then on Monday, July 13, ICE shot and killed 26-year-old Johan Sebastian Guerrero in his vehicle in Biddeford, Maine. His wife and toddler were in the car and witnessed his murder.
In the days since, we’ve learned more about Lorenzo and Johan – that they were both fathers, both workers, that they were not a threat to ICE agents or anyone in the community at the time of their murder. And we’ve learned more of the same information we already knew about Trump’s fossil fueled fascist ICE agents: that they lie, that they are afraid, that they act without compassion, and that they can be made to stop if we raise our voices together.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo had lived in this country for 35 years. He was on his way to work, doing his job, when ICE agents murdered him. The workers who witnessed what happened are now locked in ICE concentration camps. His family is demanding answers, accountability, and protection for those witnesses, and his community immediately launched vigils to honor his memory.
And on July 13 in Biddeford, Maine, ICE agents killed 26-year-old Johan Sebastian. A witness watched his partner fall to her knees looking at her husband’s body on the ground. His three year old daughter was standing next to her, crying, wearing a little pink backpack.
ICE said he weaponized his vehicle. They said the same thing about Lorenzo. In both cases, witnesses on the ground tell a different story.
Across the country we ask you to join us at vigils to amplify our demands: investigation, accountability, and protection for the witnesses detained in ICE facilities. This case will not be buried. We need as many cities represented as possible; check the map for a vigil near you, and if there’s nothing in your area, host a vigil in your community, share the toolkit, and ask your friends and family to do the same.

The stories change. The playbook doesn’t. This is what it looks like when a system treats the lives of immigrants and working families as expendable. They try to hide the truth and when the truth threatens to come out, the witnesses get locked up and the story gets buried. We have seen this before. And every time, it has been people organizing together that forced them to back down. We are strongest when we stand together. Join us July 25 to stand together for justice. For Lorenzo. For Johan. And for all the victims of state violence.
