Jan 7 update – The Senate will vote tomorrow, Jan 8, on a war powers resolution that could be a first step to reigning in the Trump Regime’s illegal war for oil in Venezuela. This is only a step, but it is a step in the right direction.
Click here to send a letter to your Representative and Senators telling them to support the resolution. We also have seen, and I am sorry if you haven’t already, the shocking and horrifying news that ICE agents shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis today. We’ll keep you updated and anticipate having actions you can share and join soon to create a non-violent response that keeps our climate and communities safe.
As we told you earlier this week, Trump invaded Venezuela and the U.S. military kidnapped their President Nicolás Maduro. Trump then declared that he is going to “run” Venezuela and that he will “get the oil flowing.”
This is an illegal war for oil. a predictable, and predicted, but no less atrocious action of a fossil fueled fascist dictator.
“It’s about oil and regime change,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said after Trump’s invasion. World leaders have already stepped up– The UN Security council, EU and others have denounced Trump’s fossil fueled fascist war for oil. And the anti-fascist climate movement has been mobilizing in response. You can join a protest or action this weekend, January 10, against the corporate sponsors of this war – or click here to host an event, or here for a host toolkit. You can also join us Thursday night for a planning call. You can also check out the talking points memo from our friends at Oil Change International which has tons of facts and stats you can use to educate and mobilize.
Now, Congress must act to assert its legal authority to stop Trump’s war. Politicians in both parties have spent the last 20 years denouncing the U.S’s endless wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and elsewhere. Tomorrow every member of the US Senate must decide if they will actually take action and stop the war on Venezuela, or stand aside and let the Trump administration continue unchecked.
If left unchecked, Trump will continue his global rampage, no matter how many people he kills. The regime has also threatened military action action against Cuba, Mexico, and Colombia, as well as threats against Greenland and the European union. Trump already said he is “locked and loaded and ready to go” into Iran.
Only Congress has the constitutional power to declare war. Lawmakers must use this authority to stop Trump NOW. Urge your members of Congress: Pass war powers resolutions to stop Trump’s military hostilities in Venezuela and beyond!

This must be the year of moving away from fossil fuels, NOT more oil wars.
