For years, we’ve been on the digital frontlines fighting back against Trump and the fossil fueled fascists who use social media like facebook, youtube, and twitter to weaponize lies and misinformation against our communities and climate. After the 2020 election and the Jan 6, 2021 insurrection, social media platforms were under tremendous pressure to clean up their platforms and ban the worst actors.
As a result, Trump got booted off Facebook and Twitter, and a handful of violent, fascist groups were banned. But, importantly, the fossil fuel companies that bankrolled Trump and his insurrection were allowed to go on advertising, lying, denying, and polluting our democracy, as well as our environment.
Now, experts and academics are again raising the alarm that social media platforms are failing to fight election lies, and they’re allowing fossil fuel companies and others to run ads with blatant misinformation about climate change, voting, and other critical issues.
Enough is enough, sign our petition to big Tech companies demanding they ban climate disinformation?
The petition reads:
“Platforms owe it to their users and the planet to stop amplifying the climate disinformation that undermines our ability to combat the climate crisis. Social media companies like yours must take concrete steps in stopping climate change disinformation.”
last month, we joined prominent environmental and tech accountability organizations including Greenpeace, 350.org, Friends of the Earth, and Accountable Tech to call on prominent social media companies to take steps in regulating climate disinformation on their platforms.
This letter comes in the wake of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change deeming “climate disinformation a threat to the world’s ability to effectively address [the planetary crisis].”
We all know that social media platforms are littered with disinformation – and that includes disinformation about the causes and solutions to the climate crisis. It’s past time for social media companies to step in and crack down on sources of blatant disinformation.
Sign now to show you’re with us, and demand that big tech companies stop the lies.
