We were all in the resistance when Trump used social media to weaponize policy against our communities and the planet. Every day was a fire hose of lies, hate, misinformation and climate denial.
But it wasn’t until the day after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol that Facebook finally suspended fossil fueled fascist Donald Trump for using it “to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government.”
But less than two years later, Nick Clegg, a top executive at Meta, the company that owns Facebook, is telling reporters that they may soon reinstate Trump’s Facebook account — perhaps as soon as this year.
We can’t let this happen again. Sign on with us and partners to demand Facebook must not reinstate Donald Trump’s account under any circumstances.
It doesn’t take an expert to know that Trump uses social media to spread disinformation and threats of violence. In fact, just a few days after Clegg said he might let Trump back on, Trump attacked the Green New Deal, threatened Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell saying he “has a DEATH WISH,” and invoked racist attacks against Asian Americans referring to McDonnell’s wife as “his China loving wife, Coco Chow.”
With violent and racist rhetoric like that, it should be obvious to Facebook that reinstating Donald Trump’s Facebook account would be bad for Facebook, our climate, and our Democracy.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and other decision makers at Facebook stood up to Trump and fossil fueled fascists before. They must not reactivate Trump’s account and let him use social media to challenge legitimate election results, climate science, and provoke further violence.
