President Biden campaigned promised to be a climate champion, and is about to give his first State of the Union address. But a year into his presidency Biden has failed to deliver on many of his promises. Even worse, many the Administration’s recent actions have betrayed Black, Indigenous and global majority communities who turned out in record numbers to elect him.
There’s still time for President Biden and his team to take bold action, and save both his political legacy and our hopes for real climate action at scale. To do it, Biden must act now to declare a climate emergency, and begin the end of federal fossil fuel permits and projects. He has the power to take these actions through executive orders and administrative action – the question is whether he has the political courage to do so.
President Biden will give his first official State of the Union address on March 1st. It would be a perfect moment to declare a climate emergency, and announce bold climate action plans. So before the speech, we’re gathering with partners in the Build Back Fossil Free coalition for a Peoples State of the Union to demand that Biden stop approving fossil fuel projects and declare a climate emergency.
With the stroke of a pen, Biden could stop dangerous fossil fuel projects like the Line 3 pipeline and Formosa Plastics that will poison communities and exacerbate the climate crisis. But instead, he’s repeatedly done the opposite: permitting more and bigger fossil fuel projects than even Trump ever did: The Biden administration has approved 3,557 permits for oil and gas drilling on public lands, given away massive checks to fossil fuel corporations, and hosted the largest offshore oil and gas lease in U.S. history.
Before the State of the Union, we need to remind Biden that he is accountable to our communities and demand that he keep fossil fuels in the ground.
During the rally, you’ll hear from frontline leaders fighting to stop fossil fuel projects across the country. We’ll share 10 actions that President Biden can take to stop fossil fuels and climate chaos. And we’ll give you simple direct actions you can take to put pressure on the White House before the State of the Union. We won’t stop until Biden uses his pen to end the era of fossil fuels!
It all starts at our POTUS on Notice rally this Thursday at 5pm PT / 8pm ET, RSVP now to join us!
