Venture Global, the massive fossil fuel company behind Calcasieu Pass (CP) 1 and 2 LNG (liquefied natural gas) export terminals has leached tons of mud and silt, contaminating nearby lakes and bayous. After initially denying responsibility, Venture Global has now admitted it broke the law and its promises to local communities, but has still not offered to clean up its mess or stop construction.
Local families that rely on local seafood for their livelihoods are devastated. And that’s all before CP2 wrecks our climate and communities with unchecked climate chaos, methane leaks, explosions, and more. Getting federal regulators in the Trump regime to do anything will be difficult, but it’s still important that we document these crimes as they happen. And we’ve already had some success convincing internatonal importers, investors and insurers to back off projects like CP2 that are clearly too dirty to go on.
We’ve been fighting CP2 and LNG exports for years, so many of you already know that, if completed, CP2 would be one of the biggest fossil fuel export terminals in the world and produce as much global warming pollution as 47 million cars or more than 50 coal-fired power plants.
In 2024, we won some important victories under the Biden Administration, which first paused CP2 and other fossil gas export projects, and later found that the whole industry of methane exports was not in the national interest. But of course Donald Trump and his fossil fueled fascist regime immediately reversed those decisions and have been pushing, hard, for CP2 and other LNG export projects like it.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Department of Energy (DOE) and other US agencies can and should shut CP2 down for violating its own permits and promises. But with Trump and literal project 2025 authors in charge, we’re not holding our breath. We might have more luck convincing European countries and companies not to buy gas from bad actors like Venture Global, which would effectively bankrupt the project. Or getting investors, insurers and other major financial firms to divest from CP2 and fossil fuels and invest in clean energy instead (which is booming), which would have the same effect.
What’s clear is that Venture Global cannot be trusted, and we need every regulator, corporation, and family fisherman to know what they did and to hold them accountable.
Support local fishermen by signing our petition to government agencies, European buyers, and investors large and small to say no to Venture Global, and shut down CP2. You can also share this instagram reel, or use this social media toolkit to spread the word.
