We’ve been telling you about Trump’s big, ugly, budget deal to give tax breaks and handouts to billionaires and polluting corporations. It squeaked through the House 215-214, and last week we got the Senate’s version of the Big Bad Bill, which is even worse. But, despite some procedural setbacks this week, the fossil fueled fascists in the Senate are still barreling ahead with a plan to pass their version of the bill within a week!
Polling an public opinion surveys show that not a lot of people know that this budget will result in higher electric bills from coast-to-coast, and massive cuts to vital services like healthcare, eldercare, childcare, and climate action. That’s why we’re teaming up with partners at Sun Day and climate elder Bill McKibben to tell the Senate to stop this big ugly bill. Click here to send a message to your Senator to tell them to protect clean power and lower our energy bills by rejecting HR1.
The Senate bill has made a lot of changes, many for the worse, from the House version. The cuts to Medicaid and other healthcare programs that keep Americans alive are even worse than the House version of the bill. The cuts to SNAP and food assistance will literally starve children. And the tax breaks for Big Oil and billionaires are bigger, more luxurious, and dirtier – meaning that the whole thing is expected to add trillions to the deficit.
But it’s the cuts to clean energy programs that experts call “garbage” and “terrible for America.” that’s because if this bill passes, 331 factories making things like solar panels, heat pumps, and parts for wind turbines could close and America could lose more than 400,000 jobs in the clean energy economy. This attack on the clean energy economy would increase your energy bill by $400 a year, all while polluting our air and water.
Fortunately, fossil fueled fascists in the Senate have hid some stumbling blocks this week – with some of the massive cuts to services, public lands giveaways, clean energy programs, and more being ruled out of the bill. But Senate Republicans say they still want to push ahead, whether it breaks the rules or the planet, and vote on the bill before July 4.
Sun Day is a movement to celebrate the power of clean energy – and we’re proud to be a partner on the September 21 actions. Solar, wind, and other clean power are providing more electricity to the world than ever before, at lower costs than dirty fossil fuels. We need to continue that momentum if we want to create a better future for all of us.
This is the most dangerous attack on clean energy in US history. Can you contact your Senator now and tell them to vote NO on HR1 to protect clean energy and lower our energy bills?
