Big Oil caused the crisis — it’s time to make polluters pay for it.

Jan 21 Update — a week ago we told you about our national week of action to make polluters pay for climate chaos. And we’ve known for years that billionaires and big oil are trying to get legal immunity from the costs of climate change. But last week we learned that the American Petroleum Institute (API)— the front group that lobbies for fossil fueled fascism and was a major funder and supporter of Trump’s rise to power (both times) — made lobbying to stop state climate lawsuits and climate superfund laws one of their top legislative priorities in 2026.

This isn’t an idle threat. Congress is debating must pass spending legislation this week and next to keep the government open and functioning. And while many Democrats are united in opposing more money for Trump’s lawless ICE gestapo, at least a handful are expected to vote to keep the government open. And in the Senate, which will vote next week, any member can offer any amendment – including one offering the fossil fuel industry legal immunity – through a process known as Vote-a-Rama. And State-level immunity bills for the fossil fuel industry have already been introduced in Utah and Oklahoma .

So here’s how you can help:

1. Call your member of Congress, and especially your Senators, and tell them not to vote for any spending bill that let’s Trump continue his lawless campaign of terror in Minnesota and other states. No more funding for ICE and Trumps Fossil fueled fascist regime. Period. If you don’t already have their numbers, call (202) 224-3121 and tell the operator where you live in order to get connected.
2. Tell your Senators to watch out for a big oil immunity amendment when the budget bill comes to them next week. Make it clear that nobody – and especially not Big Oil – should be above the law. There are more talking points and resources in this toolkit.

For years we’ve talked about how big oil billionaires and their fossil fueled fascist cronies like Trump created the climate crisis. Now, in 2026, they’ve taken it to new Extremes – invading Venezuela for oil and waging war on our cities in order to keep billionaires and fossil fueled fascist in power.

That’s why from January 26-30 we’re supporting the Make Polluters Pay Week of Action — to demand justice, accountability, and climate reparations from the corporations most responsible for this crisis. Your voice, participation, and action can help shift the cost of climate destruction and fossil fuel extraction off of communities — and onto the polluters who caused it.
